Feb 14, 2021 Season 1 Episode 6
Portia Scott Media

It's Black History Month in the United States and this episode not only brings attention to the contributions of well known Black Americans; however, I want to encourage our listeners to consider the contributions of the Black Americans in our organizations today.

While this episode is only roughly 15-minutes in duration, it is by far one of the most important pieces of content I've produced throughout my career.

I'd like to introduce you to Jayquan Noel Jenkins. Once you hear his story, you will discover that you may in fact know him.

The following are considerations we can take, today, to better value the contributions of Black Americans in our companies:

(These recommendations are also extended to our friends in countries outside the United States.)

1. Diversify our leadership team and key contributor positions.
2. Target our hiring practices to recruit talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and black veterans & retirees.
3. Invest in black entrepreneurs and start-ups via our Merger & Acquisition strategy.
4. Hire black consultants, speakers and partners.
5. Listen to our black employees.
6. Be honest about our organizationals blind spots and commit to improve them.
7. Care.
